Ash Flat sits on dolostone, in the county with the most lopsided sinkhole count in the area — and the soil on top of it is clay. Two opposite problems, one parcel.

If one town in this area matches the reputation the Ozarks have for difficult septic ground, it is this one. Most places here are more complicated than the reputation suggests. Ash Flat is not.
The state geologic map places the town on Cotter and Jefferson City dolomites. Dolostone is a carbonate rock.
Carbonate ground is where solution features form, and the county's record of them is dense. Sharp County carries 100 mapped sinkholes against 9 springs in the U.S. Geological Survey data release that digitised these features from topographic maps across northern Arkansas. That eleven-to-one ratio is the most lopsided of any county in this area — most record springs and sinkholes in broadly comparable numbers.
One honest caution, because it is the sort of thing usually glossed over. Naming the formation beneath a town and counting features across a county are two separate facts, and joining them is an inference rather than a finding. The Arkansas Geological Survey's published account of how these features actually form in this part of the state examines the Everton Formation near Melbourne — a different unit. That report is worth reading, but the mechanism it documents should not be assumed to transfer between formations without the work having been done.
But the soil is the constraint people meet first
Here is what makes Ash Flat genuinely awkward rather than simply rocky, and it is not what a sinkhole map would lead anyone to expect.
The dominant soil around the town is Gepp, a clayey residuum weathered from cherty limestone and dolostone, covering roughly 44 percent of the surrounding country — an unusually high share for a single soil in this area. The most extensive map units are Gepp on 12 to 30 percent slopes, on 3 to 8 percent, and on 8 to 12 percent, in that order.
Clay is a problem for a drainfield in the opposite way from rock, and it produces the same result. Soil survey data place percolation limitations on about 82 percent of the area around Ash Flat — the highest such share of any town covered on this site. Effluent that will not move through the soil leaves a field with nowhere to send it.
So the design question here is usually not “how deep is bedrock” but “will this ground accept water at all, and where does it go if it does.” Those are different questions and they lead to different systems.
And then there is Moko
Alongside Gepp, the area carries the Arkana-Moko complex on 3 to 12 percent slopes across about 6 percent of the country. Moko places a hard rock contact at seven to eleven inches.
That is the second constraint, and it can sit next to the first. A parcel can have clay that will not perc in one part and rock under nine inches of soil in another. Around 92 percent of the area carries a “very limited” rating for a conventional absorption field.
What “very limited” does and does not mean
An 82 percent percolation-limited figure reads like a verdict. It is not one, and it would be dishonest to present it as though a system cannot be installed around Ash Flat. Plenty are.
The rating describes how favourable ground is for a conventional absorption field — a tank and buried gravel trenches relying on the natural soil to accept and treat effluent. Where the natural soil will not do that unaided, Arkansas rules provide for designs that work around it, and the soil evaluation is what identifies which ones the site will support.
What the figure does mean, practically, is that on this ground a conventional trench field is the exception rather than the default assumption, and that a design produced without a proper evaluation is more likely to be wrong here than almost anywhere else covered on this site.
The reserve area problem, sharpened
Arkansas requires every lot to have both a primary and a secondary absorption area, each sized on natural soil data. On ground where 82 percent carries percolation limitations, finding one suitable area is work; finding two is the constraint that shapes the whole design.
This is the practical reason to establish where both areas go before deciding where anything else on a parcel goes — a point that applies with unusual force here. Siting the field before the house is the same discipline stated generally.
Closed depressions, and what to do about one
On a parcel in this county it is worth walking for low spots that never drain anywhere — water that arrives and simply goes down.
That is not a reason for alarm and it is not a disqualification. It is a reason to raise it directly with the Designated Representative and the county Environmental Health Specialist during the evaluation, because it bears on where effluent would go. Arkansas rules set separations from wells, streams, lakes, ponds and domestic springs, and require a soil evaluation accounting for depth to rock and impervious layers — the professional evaluating the site is the person to bring a depression to.
Worth stating plainly: the sinkhole counts in the data release were digitised from topographic maps dating between 1942 and 2014, not field-verified. They describe where the ground has behaved this way historically across the county. They are not a survey of any particular parcel, and no map substitutes for someone standing on the ground.
Where the water goes matters more here
Carbonate ground can move water faster and further than the surface suggests, which is the reason the depth and separation rules exist.
