Every page on this site mentions the same rule, because it governs everywhere in Arkansas. Where rock and soil horizons are interlayered, depth to bedrock is the cumulative thickness of soil layers at least four inches thick within seventy-two inches of the surface.

On deep ground it is a formality — total up six feet of soil and the answer is six feet. Around Mountain View it is the whole design. This is the node where interlayered soil over rock is not an edge case but the ordinary condition, and where the running total genuinely differs from what a first strike of rock would suggest.

Cherty carbonate residuum, and a contact at nine inches

The most extensive soil around Mountain View is Noark, at roughly 26 percent of the surrounding country — formed in slope alluvium over residuum from cherty limestone, clayey-skeletal, and deep but very cherty throughout. Behind it, Clarksville at about 7 percent, also cherty carbonate residuum.

Then the one that matters most for the rule. Moko accounts for about 5 percent, and it places a hard rock contact at seven to eleven inches. It shows up in the Newnata-Eden-Moko association, steep, covering about 6 percent of the area.

That combination — deep-but-cherty soils interleaved with soils that hit rock inside a foot — is exactly what the cumulative rule was written for. A pit on one part of a parcel totals enough qualifying soil; a pit two hundred feet away, on the same slope and the same rock, does not.

Why "deep" is the wrong word for this karst

Mountain View is sometimes described as sitting on deep karst, and the data do not support that. What is here is shallow, cherty and steep: rock close to the surface across a meaningful share of the area, chert content that reduces the effective volume of soil doing the work, and slopes that constrain where anything can be laid out.

Stone County records 45 springs and 49 sinkholes — close to even, and a normal Ozark ratio rather than a remarkable one. The solution features are present. They are not the thing most likely to decide a design here; the soil depth is.

Working the arithmetic on a real hillside

It helps to see what the rule does rather than what it says.

Picture a pit opened on a Stone County slope. The top eleven inches are gravelly silt loam — that counts. Below it, rock. If the rock is continuous to six feet, the cumulative total is eleven inches and the ground will not take a conventional trench field.

But interlayered ground is rarely that tidy. Below the first rock there may be another band of soil, then more rock, then more soil. Every soil layer at least four inches thick, anywhere within the top seventy-two inches, adds to the total. A profile that looked hopeless at the first strike can accumulate a workable depth — or it can look promising near the surface and total almost nothing.

That is why nobody can answer this from the road. The number is not visible, not inferable from the neighbour's system, and not obtainable from a percolation rate, which measures how fast water left one hole and cannot count layers below it. Slope is the second constraint, and it compounds

Soil survey data place slope limitations on roughly 69 percent of the country around Mountain View, and give about 92 percent a “very limited” rating for a conventional absorption field. The two largest map units are Noark very gravelly silt loam on 20 to 40 percent and 8 to 20 percent slopes.

Arkansas requires trenches to be level and on contour, with a minimum of six feet between them and eight feet centre to centre. On a 20 to 40 percent slope, fitting that geometry — plus the required reserve area — is the work. Two constraints that each narrow the options, acting on the same ground, is what puts this node at the demanding end.

What this changes for a buyer or builder

Do not price from acreage. On ground where the usable depth changes across a single slope, the buildable envelope is a fraction of the parcel and its position is not obvious from a plat or a drone photo.

Expect the field to choose the house site. The drainfield has fewer possible positions than a house does, and here that gap is wide. Siting the field first matters more on this ground than almost anywhere else covered on this site.

The reserve area is the binding constraint. Arkansas requires both a primary and a secondary absorption area, each sized on natural soil data. Where slope and shallow rock already limit the options, finding two workable areas rather than one is what shapes the design — and occasionally what rules a site out.

An unfavourable evaluation is not a dead end. Arkansas rules provide for engineered approaches to difficult ground, including seasonal water table adjustments and capping fills with adjustment credits capped. The evaluation identifies which the site supports. It is the difference between a design that works and a guess.
