The geologic map says carbonate. The soil survey says sandstone across two thirds of the area. Both are correct — and which one you use decides whether you over-engineer a system here.

Of the seven towns covered on this site, Cave City is the one where the two standard sources most visibly disagree — and the disagreement is worth more than either answer on its own.

The state geologic map places the town on Ordovician carbonate: Cason, Fernvale, Kimmswick and Plattin limestones together with the Joachim Dolomite, with the Everton Formation about half a kilometre away. On that basis Cave City is carbonate country, and the name is not misleading anyone.

The soil survey says something else. Across the surrounding country the dominant soils are sandstone-derived: Boden at about 27 percent, Portia at about 18 percent, with Lily and Brockwell behind them — together roughly two thirds of the area. The cherty carbonate soils, Clarksville and Gepp, come to about 18 percent between them.

Neither source is wrong. They answer different questions.

A geologic map records which rock formation lies beneath a point. A soil survey records what covers an area, to what depth, and with what properties. Those are different measurements, and in this landscape they routinely diverge, because younger material caps and mantles the older rock beneath it.

For septic siting the distinction is not academic. A drainfield is built in soil. It is the soil that has to accept and treat effluent, the soil whose depth the rule counts, and the soil a pit exposes. The bedrock still matters — it sets the floor and it governs where water goes once it gets past the soil — but the first question a design has to answer is about the material a trench sits in.

So on this ground the honest answer to “is Cave City karst country?” is: the rock is carbonate, the ground you dig in mostly is not, and the design follows the ground you dig in.

What that means in practice

It means Cave City is more workable than its reputation. Soil survey data put percolation limitations on roughly 52 percent of the surrounding country and give about 74 percent a “very limited” rating — behind only Melbourne among the carbonate towns.

The dominant Boden soil carries a lithic contact at roughly 48 to 51 inches. That sits inside the seventy-two-inch window Arkansas measures across, so it counts — but it leaves a substantial thickness of workable soil above it, which is a different proposition from rock at nine inches.

Same county as Ash Flat, different ground

This is the cleanest demonstration available of why county-level information cannot answer a parcel-level question.

Cave City and Ash Flat are both in Sharp County. They share the same county health unit, the same statewide rules, and the same county-level statistics — including the 100 mapped sinkholes to 9 springs that make Sharp the most sinkhole-dominated county in this area.

They do not share their ground.

A homeowner near Ash Flat is most likely fighting clay that will not accept water. A homeowner fifteen miles away near Cave City is, more often than not, working sandier ground with moderate limitations. Same county, same sinkhole count, materially different design problems.

The practical cost of getting this wrong runs in the expensive direction. Someone told they are in karst country, and pricing accordingly, may budget for an engineered system on ground that would have taken a conventional field. The evaluation settles it — and on this ground it is as likely to bring good news as bad.

Where shallow rock is genuinely the story here

None of the above means rock is never the constraint at Cave City. It means it is localised rather than general, and it is possible to say where.

The Lily-Ramsey-Rock outcrop complex covers about 4 percent of the surrounding country, and rock at or near the surface is its defining feature. On a parcel that falls in it, the picture resembles the steeper ground further west far more than it resembles the Boden and Portia country next door.

The most extensive map units give a fair sense of the range: Boden stony fine sandy loam on 8 to 20 percent slopes at about 15 percent, Portia fine sandy loam on 3 to 8 percent at about 13 percent, Clarksville very gravelly silt loam on 20 to 40 percent at about 13 percent, and Lily fine sandy loam on 8 to 12 percent at about 9 percent.

Read that list and the pattern is clear enough: gentle sandy ground and steep cherty ground both exist within the same few miles. Which one a particular parcel sits on is not a question a map answers. A soil pit read by a licensed Designated Representative is.

The Everton Formation lies close by — about half a kilometre from town — and it is the unit in which the Arkansas Geological Survey documented a collapse mechanism near Melbourne. Proximity is not the same as presence beneath a given parcel, and that report describes a different site in a different county.
